Lake Manyara, at the foot of the 600 meters high Rift Valley escarpment, offers fantastic game viewing opportunities. But this area also makes a perfect place for nature walks, cultural walks and getting a real taste of the Tanzanian life. Mto wa Mbu is a fascinating melting pot of different cultures and tribes. Take some time out of the safari vehicle and start exploring on foot!
We offer a variety of walking tours that start from Migombani Camp or in the center of Mto wa Mbu village. You can opt for one hike or may combine more into one longer trek. All walking activities are being accompanied by an English speaking local guide.

Escarpment Walk Migombani
Duration: 1-2 hours
Can’t get enough of the breathtaking view over Lake Manyara and the green valley? Then climb the escarpment even further! Follow the narrow path that is daily used by the Maasai and their cattle to another plateau. And be rewarded with a splendid view! The hike starts from the gate of the camp and can easily be done as a self-guided walk.
Sundowner at the Escarpment
Or why don't you enjoy a sundowner from this unique spot? Hike up to the escarpment accompanied by a Maasai warrior and quietly watch as the sun sets over the beautiful scenery. Snacks will be provided and we will make sure to bring up your cold beer, G&T or other favorite drink as well.
Nature Walk Migombani
Duration: 1-2 hours
Join this nature walk that goes mainly downhill and enjoy beautiful views of the valley! From the plateau where Migombani Camp is situated you follow the path which is often used by the Maasai and their cattle. It then turns into a forest trail through a beautiful piece of jungle, with a clear stream running through it. And then finally ends between the banana plantations on the outskirts of Mto wa Mbu.
Village Walk Mto wa Mbu
Duration: 2 hours
A beautiful village walk to introduce you the everyday life in Africa! This hike starts in Mto wa Mbu. With our friendly local guide, who grew up in the village, we will take you for a wonderful cultural experience. You will visit small farms, meet the locals and see a large banana plantation where your guide will show you how traditional banana beer is made. Of course you are welcome to taste! You will also be introduced to the tribal painting and possibly go home with your own colorful painting!
Miwaleni Lake & Waterfall Hike
Duration: 3 hours
The Miwaleni Lake and Waterfall is a green oasis at the foot of the Great Rift Valley. You can take a walk around the lake, lined with thriving papyrus. It is particularly a popular place for the Rangi people who collect the papyrus for the mats and baskets they create. Following the river you may even opt to hike to the scenic Miwaleni Waterfall. This is a more challenging journey over rocks and stones. But at the end a refreshing pool is awaiting you at the bottom of the 15 meters fall!
The lake is located at about 5 km from the campsite. You can either bike to the starting point of the walk, take a tuktuk or combine it with an exciting ATV ride!
Ngorongoro Forest Walk
Duration: 2 hours
The trail of this hike starts from Karatu, a 30 min drive from the campsite. It is an extraordinary and beautiful walk though, and definitely worth the transfer.
You will hike into the jungle on the slopes of the Ngorongoro Forest Highlands. After learning more about the animal tracks in the rainforest, observing medical plants and viewing the amazing bird life you will reach the “Elephant Caves”. These caves have been created by elephants digging up the earth ingest the vitamin-rich soil. Discover the magnificent Endoro Waterfall, where the rushing water tumbles down of a 100 meters high cliff.
After the hike you will return to Gibb’s Farm, a luxury lodge situated in an old colonial farmhouse, where you will enjoy a farm-style lunch before returning to Migombani Camp.
